Episode 98: Too Much Promotion
In a world so full of entertainment, we are constantly being bombarded for promotion for the new entertainment. You can't even watch TV without having to sit through ads every once in a while. They're all about some product or a preview for a new movie or show. Stores have ads everywhere for products and stores even have their own ads advertising deals and sales.
Of course, promotion is necessary. If you have something you're trying to sell, you not only need people to know about it, you need to be able to convince them to spend money on it. Convince them that whatever thing you made is worth their consumption. Restaurant commercials make their food look much fancier and smoother than it actually is when you order it.
However, it is entirely possible to promote too much. Getting too much exposure to an upcoming thing can turn one off from actually taking part in it. You get annoyed in a sense and just want to be away from the thing that's constantly being dangled in front of you.
As such a big fan of music, I notice this very prominently when a lot of bands have a new album coming out. AJR, I love you, but I'm going to pick on you for a little bit. Their first single from their upcoming album came out in July last year. As in 2022. And they didn't even announce the title or release date of this new album until last month. As in August 2023. That is OVER A YEAR of promotion before the album was even properly announced. I understand the guys had been going through a lot of stuff, including the illness and passing of their father, and I feel genuine sorrow for them and my heart goes out to them, but they really shouldn't have started building up hype for an album they weren't anywhere close to releasing. If you're going to start teasing a new album, only do so if it's going to be released in a few months. Releasing the lead single and then releasing different singles sporadically before finally announcing a new album over a year later is frankly kinda ridiculous. They also shouldn't have been releasing singles throughout all that time. The album isn't out and they've already released four songs from it and snippets of others. I don't wanna already know half of an album before it's released. It kills the hype and some of the experience. Fall Out Boy, Paramore, Blink-182, and Thirty Seconds To Mars handled the promotions of their new albums much better. AJR, I still love you guys, though.
Aside from music though, I get kinda turned off from things if I get advertised about them too much. There have been a number of commercials throughout my life where I saw them so much I just got tired and annoyed whenever it came on yet again. There are many shows and movies I see advertised so much that I don't wanna watch them just because of how much they are tried to be shoved down my throat.
It's a double-edged sword and a thing you have to balance well. You certainly wanna promote but you don't wanna do it too much or else you're gonna try too hard and turn people off from the very thing you want them to try.
Anyway, see you next week!
