Episode 87: Missing The Hype(beasts) 2: YouTube Pranksters
The other day, I watched a video from my favorite YouTuber, Penguinz0. In this video, he talked about a recent despicable "prank" some guys pulled on a hearing-impaired kid and his dad.
If you don't know who Mr. Beast is, he's a very popular, very rich YouTuber who does a lot of using his wealth to buy stuff for people as well as help them out.
These aforementioned "some guys" approached this kid and his dad in a store and said they were working for Mr. Beast and that they were doing a "fill the cart" challenge wherein they would blindfold the dad and son, and during a certain time limit they would fill their cart with toys, and the guys would pay for everything in their cart. However, while they were filling up the cart, the dad heard the guys running away.
According to the victims of this "prank", the kid was having a dream come true by thinking he was gonna be in a Mr. Beast video, and the guys saw that the kid was hearing-impaired and told them that was why they picked them for the challenge. So, essentially, these guys ruined the day of a disabled child and spat upon a dream of his because they thought it was funny. One of the "pranksters" even posted a response video and he's trying to stifle laughter the whole time, even though he's trying to justify himself and "apologize".
But, there's a good ending. The store (I believe Target) and I think a toy company too got together and got the kid like $400 worth of gift cards, and Mr. Beast himself is trying to get in contact with the kid and the dad so he can do something for them. I don't watch Mr. Beast, but I know he's a genuinely good dude and this just proves it moreso.
If you're not mad about that "prank", I seriously question your morals. But the thing is, YouTube is full of people like those guys. Not only do people do bad things and call it a prank, they also fake pranks all the time just for the views it'll give them.
There's a difference between a practical joke and just being a jerk. It's a prank to put toothpaste in Oreos or change the sugar to salt; it's being a jerk to ruin a child's day and make him think his dreams are coming true just to run away laughing.
I love harmless pranks. One of my favorite shows is a hidden-camera show about four (now three - he not ded, he just left) middle-aged men who do pranks in public. But they aren't mean to the strangers; or at least when they are, they either refuse to do the thing or they apologize afterwards and make sure the subject is okay with being on television.
In other words, go ahead and pull pranks, as long as they're fun and not just you being a jerk. Comedians are fun, bullies are not.
Anyway, see you next week!
