Episode 75: Mr. Hardy Saves The Stage
When I was in middle school, I was willingly in two musicals: The Pirates of Penzance (sixth grade) and The Music Man (seventh grade). I only had a speaking part in the latter. I had a whole two lines all to myself!
I didn't carry on my musical performing into high school, though I seriously thought about it. I even tried to audition for one of the plays, but I was too late to do so. Admittedly, one of the big reasons, perhaps the main reason, I wanted to get back on the stage was because I had a big crush on this girl who starred in, like, every stage production our high school put on. She was incredibly out of my league and I should've known, but that doesn't stop a boy from dreaming.
Yeah, I wanted back on stage because of a girl, but I did also want back on stage because I genuinely missed performing. I had a great time on Pirates of Penzance and The Music Man, so I wanted to be on the stage again. Even still to this day my dream is to be an actor, only now it's a voice actor.
Though my time on stage is long past me (maybe not forever??), my love for theatre never really went away. I love American Idiot, Hamilton, Madagascar: The Musical (more on that soon), SpongeBob SquarePants: The Musical, The Greatest Showman, and, of course, Pirates of Penzance and The Music Man.
I get to control aux a lot at work, and I have a giant playlist on my Spotify dedicated to only be played at work. That playlist includes a lot of songs from American Idiot and Hamilton. And don't get me wrong, Green Day's original version of "21 Guns" is awesome, but I gotta say I prefer to the musical cast's version. Hearing all those voices together harmonizing and anguishing in their roles gives that version a beauty that Green Day's physically could not have. Please go listen to the Broadway cast recording of "21 Guns". It's beautiful and if you have a lick of good taste in music you'll love it.
A couple weeks ago, my sister and I went to a live performance of Madagascar: The Musical. It absolutely banged, and not only gave my love for musicals a new spark, but also re-ignited my love for the Madagascar franchises, causing me to rewatch all four films and the Penguins of Madagascar cartoon.
It's like bands you like. You love listening to the band on whatever device, but you can't beat the experience of seeing them live. You can listen to cast recordings on Spotify or YouTube or whatever, you can often times even watch a performance of the musical on some streaming service, but you know what's best? Actually seeing the musical.
Well, I just wanted to talk about how much I love theatre, especially musical theatre. Anyway,
see you next week!
This is the guy I played in The Music Man. My lines were "tell us, what's his line? What's his line?" and "he's a what?".
