Episode 74: Toilet Humor

When I was a kid, my best friend and I thought everything toilet humor was hilarious. My dad remembers times he'd come to pick me up from my friend's house, and he'd hear us just saying words like "poop" and "butt" and laughing incessantly.
Why do kids, or I guess mostly just boys, think potty humor is so funny? What's so funny about human waste and the body parts that expel it? Maybe poop is funny because it's stinky and gross, and butts are funny because they squeeze out the stinky gross stuff.
I am a 22-year-old man. I can vote, drive, drink, go to an R-rated movie entirely by myself, and can even book my own hotel room. I am, by all means, an adult.
But that doesn't mean I'm entirely mature. I'm watching a cartoon about penguins right now. And guess what? Toilet humor is kind of funny. I'm as old as 11 × 2 and poopy still makes me go haha sometimes. To quote one of my favorite YouTubers, Vargskelethor Joel, "I'm a simple man - I see a poopy, and I laugh".
I think part of why I often find toilet humor funny is the simple fact that it isn't funny. That might seem hard to understand at first, but think about it. The fact that toilet humor is so obviously, so explicitly not funny, makes it funny. It's sheer level of unfunniness, makes it funny, because pretending it's funny makes it funny. Follow me? I'm not sure if I follow myself. But I think I do.
It's like one of those "so bad it's good" movies. Those straight-to-DVD slasher films that are obviously horrible but one still watches them because it's just so awful that it reaches the point of actually being enjoyable. Poopy jokes are so unfunny that they reach the point of actually being funny.
But of course you shouldn't rely on too much toilet humor. Laying on too much of that will make your sense of humor stinkier than the poopies you're talking about. At the end of the day, it's gross, but a little potty humor never hurt anyone.

I just wrote a whole blog about poopy peepee.

Anyway, see you next week!
