Episode 66: Rewatching Shows

Women on dating apps, at least women my age, love pointing out two things, or one or the other, about themselves: they love dogs and The Office. I also love dogs and The Office; they are too very well-liked things. Most people love dogs, and most people who have seen The Office enjoy it.
But there's a problem with popular, greatly-rewatchable shows like The Office - it's all some people watch. Some people pretty much watch The Office or similarly rewatchable shows on loop, not really watching much else.

I used to not rewatch shows, and didn't really get why people do, for these reasons.
1. It's not a new experience. When you're rewatching a show, you know everything that's going to happen. You know what becomes of each character, so the element of suspense and wonder is gone.
2. You know the high points and low points of the show. You know when an episode is coming up that it's one of the stinkers. You know which seasons are the ones that drag a little bit. You know which episodes that one annoying character is in.
3. Jokes aren't as funny anymore. Perhaps it's harder to laugh at a joke you've already heard. It's not the same the first time, so it's not funny anymore.
4. You're missing out on other shows. By spending your tv-viewing time rewatching shows you've already seen, you're neglecting other good, new-to-you shows that you'd probably enjoy.

But, I've taken to rewatching shows now. I've seen Regular Show almost three times, Daredevil three times, BoJack Horseman twice, and am on my third watch of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, as well as my third(ish) watch of The Walking Dead. Now I rewatch shows, and get why people do, for the following reasons:
1. Treasuring the old experience. You know you're watching a show you love, so you're just enjoying yourself. The show means something to you, or else you wouldn't be rewatching it. Maybe it gives you some nostalgia too.
2. Noticing things you didn't notice before. Maybe you understand a plotline more or you relate to a certain character more than the last time.
3. Jokes are actually still just as funny, maybe even funnier. Always Sunny has never been funnier seeing it for the third time. The funny moments run through my brain and I watch them as they happen with a smile on my face, and laugh just like it's the first time.
4. The suspense is gone, and maybe that's actually a good thing. You don't have to worry about what's gonna happen or if a certain character is safe, because you know the answers. You know how it all shakes out, and are just enjoying the ride again. There are also no spoilers you have to avoid.

That's all I got. It was just something I wanted to talk about, especially since I'm currently rewatching three (Regular Show, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and The Walking Dead) of my favorite shows. Anyway,

see you next week!
