Episode 50: Mr. Hardy Spooks The World
"There's razors in your apple/on Halloween, Halloween, Halloween/there's anthrax in your Snapple/on Halloween, Halloween, Halloween."
-Jacksfilms, "Razors In Your Apple"
I've always loved Halloween. It's my second favorite holiday (after Christmas). I will always dress up every year, no matter how old I get. Last year I was Clark Kent, and this year I will be BoJack Horseman. I already have a costume lined up for next year. I love the costumes, the harmless celebration of spookiness, the autumn weather, the horror movies, and the music. And I certainly loved the trick-or-treating and the ensuing candy as a kid.
So, of course I have to write a Halloween special. And it's just so perfect that this is my big fiftieth episode!
Christianity vs. Halloween
I am Christian, and thus my whole life I've been surrounded by fellow Christians. I've known people with differing views on Halloween. The holiday can be a divisive topic among Christians. I've known Christians who celebrate it just as much as I do as well as Christians who don't celebrate it because their teaching tells them it's demonic. But I'm here to tell you, Halloween itself isn't demonic. It doesn't even have demonic origins.
Halloween started as Samhain, a holiday where people believed the ghosts of the dead would freely roam about. People would put on masks whenever they left their house to blend in with the ghosts. The church turned Samhain into All Saints' Day, which was moreso a broader celebration of departed souls. This was when children would start dressing up for candy, and the celebration of spooky times came in. The influx of Irish immigrants to the US brought there practices here and All Saints' Day became Halloween. Decades of commercialization and pop culture filled out the cracks and made Halloween into what it is now. I don't think I got anything wrong, but here's a video that explains the X-Men Origins: Halloween if I did: https://youtu.be/dHQZErtwA3E
I'm fully aware that there are people out there who twist Halloween and make it a satanic thing. I remember as a kid not being able to let my cat outside on Halloween. But Halloween is only demonic if you make it that way.
Costumes
Like I said before, I always dress up. And I usually have my costume planned well in advance. Some Halloween costumes in recent years include SpongeBob, Carl Grimes, Jack Torrance, The Punisher, Charlie Kelly, Clark Kent, and BoJack Horseman.
Everyone should dress up. It's a day of the year you can dedicate to dressing like an idiot and you're supposed to. Plus, you can embody a character you really like or just have fun.
In Conclusion
Anyway, I love Halloween. I think I've explained enough why I love Halloween so much. I also like the slasher film series of the same name. The new one was pretty good. I now have two friends who own a Michael Myers mask. Celebrate Halloween some way. Even if you don't dress up, have fun somehow.
Anyways,
Scare you next week!
