Episode 47: Soulmates
"I felt it in my chest as she looked at me/I knew we were bound to be together/bound to be together."
-Walk The Moon, "Shut Up and Dance"
I'm gonna say it: I don't believe in soulmates. Maybe it's just the lonely, desperate curmudgeon in me, but I don't think there is a woman out there who was born to be with me. And, conversely, I don't think I was born to be with some woman out there. I genuinely do not believe that anyone on this planet was born to be with anyone else on this planet.
I believe that people meet each other, and if they're right for each other, they fall in love. It's a combination of shared interests, passions, and attraction - it is not that you were born for each other.
What if you believe in soulmates?
More power to you, then. If you think that the person you're with was born for you and you were born for them, then great. Or if you're single and think there's a person out there who was born for you and you just haven't met them yet, then that's also great. I'm glad you have that hope and joy. It's just my opinion that soulmates don't exist. If you think they do, don't let me stop you.
Good couples
I know my fair share of good couples and I'm glad they're together. Like I said, people fall in love and can, and often do, have lifelong, happy relationships. But that doesn't mean soulmates exist. In my book, all that means is two people met each other and truly fell in love.
In all honesty, I hope my mind is changed.
I hope I meet a girl and fall so much in love that we both think we were born for each other. In AJR's song "Dear Winter", the singer writes a song for his future son. He sings, "I'm hoping that someday, I can meet you on this earth. But shit, I gotta meet your mom first".
Now, of course I want to meet someone and fall in love. But that doesn't mean we were born to be with each other. It just means that things worked out well.
I'm a pretty strong Christian. It seems easy and convenient to believe that God destines two people to be together. I certainly think that God draws us to certain people and away from certain people, but I don't think God made any of us born to be with someone else. Maybe I'm wrong. But, it's just how I feel.
Anyway, see you next week!
