Episode 25: Moms vs. Mothers: The Mother's Day Special
"Give me a reason to be, momma/'cause I'm down on my knees/I'm begging please/help me back on my feet, momma/'cause I need someone to believe, believe, believe in."
-New Politics, "Tonight You're Perfect"
The title of this episode may be confusing for some. Moms vs. mothers? Aren't they the same thing? Most of the time, they are. But there's a difference, and we don't often talk about or even notice that difference. I'll get into what I mean by that in this blog episode.
Moms
So what's a mom? A mom is, essentially, an older female figure in your life who raises you and takes care of you. Being a mom requires love and caring. Moms are loving and take care of their children and are always there for them. Not only did she take care of you and your home life while you were growing up, she's there for you throughout your whole life. Even when you're a whole adult person, your mom is someone you come to for advice or even if you just need someone to listen to while you vent.
Mothers
What does it take to be a mother? Literally just having a child. Merely giving birth is all you need to do to become a mother. While most mothers do all the things moms do, there are absent mothers and abusive mothers. These people aren't moms.
Being a mom and a mother
This is the most common situation, and what should be the only one. All mothers should play the role of mom in the lives of their children.
Being a mother but not a mom
Unfortunately, this happens, like I already discussed.
Being a mom but not a mother
This happens too, but this is a good thing. There are many great moms out there who didn't actually birth their children, but adopted them, and give them a loving home and all the care they need.
My mom
I'm so glad that my mom is a mom, and not just my mother. My mom is one of my favorite people on the planet. She's strong, funny, smart, and, most admirably, she's put up with me for 21 years. I'm thankful for my mom and she definitely deserves to be celebrated every mother's day. I know she'll read this, so happy Mother's Day, Mom! I hope you enjoy it.
See you next week!
