Episode 18: Kicking The Snakes Away
"Snakes are biting at my heels/the worries that refuse to let us go/I've been kicking them away/been hoping not to let them take control."
-Bastille, "Snakes"
This is gonna be a sort of Saint Patrick's Day "special".
My favorite song
My favorite song, the one I quoted above, is
"Snakes" by Bastille. The song compares worries to snakes, and chronicles ones attempts to outrun the snakes, kick them away, or simply hide from them. To overcome their worries. The singer finds that it's easier to hide from the snakes then it is to outrun them or fight them, as the chorus says, "but it's easier to bury my head in the sand sometimes, yes it's easier to bury my head in the sand sometimes, and I know, I know, I know it's not the right way to go, but I pray for the ground to swallow me whole."
So how does this tie into Saint Patrick's Day?
Saint Patrick is celebrated for mainly two reasons. The first reason, the accurate and actually celebration-worthy one, is for his ministry and spread of Christianity in Ireland.
The other reason is a legend, one that says that he drove all the snakes out of Ireland. This has been proven to be false, as there weren't snakes in Ireland at the time. Plus, it's not like one man can drive a whole kind of reptile out of an entire country.
Kick the snakes away
We all have snakes in our life. I know I have pits of my own. They're constantly biting at my heels. I know you have snakes because you're a human being. No human being goes through their entire life completely free of worries. I know it's easier said then done, but we all have to try to fight our snakes. Drive them out. Kick them away.
While yes, it is easier to bury your head in the sand, and hope the ground swallows you whole, that doesn't make the snakes go away. They will just follow you into the sand, or go down with you into that hole, and keep biting at your heels. The only way you can defeat your snakes is to fight them.
Face your problems head on and combat them. Look for ways to improve, and do things you're nervous about. Look for reassurance about things you doubt, and keep good relationships with people you fear you might be straining from.
Luck vs. Snakes
Saint Patrick's Day is all about luck, the luck of the Irish. You may consider yourself to be a pretty lucky person. Regardless, luck doesn't keep snakes away. Worries are a mind thing. The luckiest people in the world have at least one thing they can't escape: their brain. All you can do is try to help your brain, and try to keep it safe from the snakes as best you can.
Here's a thing I drew a while ago, as art for the Bastille song. It's not very good, but it fits, so I'm using it.
See you next week!
